Parminder is regarded as a prominent and accomplished junior at the Bar by his peers and is well-known and highly regarded for his skills in client care and his ability to delve straight to the root of any matter and offer simple and effective advice that will best serve a clients interests. It is further said that Parminder is practical in his approach to cases and gives attention and scrutiny to every detail which is reflected in his presentation and comprehension of every case he undertakes. Previous career experience:
Parminder was called to the Bar in 2001, after which he undertook the New York State Bar exams, acknowledged as one of the toughest Bars to sit worldwide, and successfully passed whilst attaining the highest score for a candidate from his jurisdiction.
Following this Parminder took various enviable posts within leading London Law firms and within the In-house departments of several companies including, among others: Freshfields, Dechert, Ashursts, Lloyds TSB, Disney and American Express to name but a few. He has thereby gained several years of expertise in Company, Corporate and Commercial law and has worked on a variety of domestic and international projects including international litigation/arbitration including the finalisation of a multi-billion dollar joint-venture pipeline agreement.
After several years of work in the City, Parminder dual-qualified as a Solicitor and briefly practiced as a freelance Solicitor-Advocate through various mid-sized firms in several areas of law in preparation for his career at the Bar.
Practice at the Bar:
Since Parminder’s subsequent return to the Bar, following his productive hiatus as an Attorney and Solicitor, he has immersed himself in his present practice areas of law which comprises Immigration, Asylum & Human Rights law, Public & Administrative law, general Civil law and Company/Corporate/Commercial law.
Immigration, Asylum & Human Rights:
The majority of Parminder’s practice pertains to Immigration, Asylum & Human Rights law and in this regard he regularly appears at the First Tier Tribunals and Upper Tribunals of the Immigration and Asylum Chamber (IAC) (for example, IAC Taylor House, IAC Hatton Cross, IAC Copthall House etc.) dealing with a wide range of appeals of varying complexity.
Parminder is considered an experienced practitioner and possesses a wealth of immigration experience that has been obtained at all levels of legal hierarchy within the Tribunals' purview, ranging from simple entry clearance/student/points-based matters to complex asylum, deportation and human rights appeals and has appeared in almost every type of immigration matter that can be heard before these Tribunals. Consequently as a result of the breadth of his practice, he is also intimately familiar with the full range of applications that may be made under the UKBA’s Immigration Rules (e.g. entry clearance, settlement, indefinite leave, asylum etc.) and possesses an in-depth understanding of the technicalities and key features of each type of application and the entire appeal process from start to finish. It is upon this sound knowledge base that he has built his established and busy practice.
Furthermore, Parminder has several years of extensive experience in representing Sri Lankan asylum appellants and has gained significant exposure in this niche area and consequently possesses an in-depth knowledge of the potential risks on return to that country for asylum-seekers.
Previous Work at the Court of Appeal:
Parminder’s expertise in advocacy is exemplified by his regular appearances in the High Court and Court of Appeal, in matters of complex legal intricacy. Aside from Tribunal-level work, his practice at the High Court and Court of Appeal has seen personal and professional success, commencing with his first appearance in the well-known Deportation matter of OP (Jamaica) before a panel of three respected Lord Justices, through to recent frequent appearances before the High Court in several matters.
In the matter of OP (Jamaica), although a junior, he was opposed by a Queen’s Counsel and was complemented by Lord Justice Wall on his unwavering representation.
While representing an appellant in an extremely meritorious matter before the Court of Appeal concerning the 14-year Long-Residence-concession (under 276B), known as MW (Ghana), Parminder succeeded in negotiating the remittal of this matter before a substantive hearing, which was in his client’s best interests and ultimately ensured his success without even needing to appear before the Court of Appeal.
Recent Work at the High Court:
Other examples of more recent complex matters include that of R (SMW) v SSHD, which related to the threatened removal of a political asylum seeker who was a key witness to the political violence against the Kalenjin tribe instigated by senior figures in the Nigerian government. This client’s removal was successfully prevented and he is now under the care of the International Criminal Court in a witness protection programme.
Additionally, there are two other matters due to be heard before the High Court and Court of Appeal respectively this year. The first, R (Jain) v SSHD), relates to the threatened removal of a former work permit holder whose matter is being reconsidered by the Secretary of State at present. The second matter,
R (Pasha) v SSHD), relates to the correct method of assessing whether to grant indefinite leave to a Work Permit holder where there are breaks in his 5-year continuity. This application is pending before the Court of Appeal.
Public Access for Private Clients:
Parminder is registered to receive Public Access clients and is now able to undertake work directly from private clients.
Pro Bono Work:
Parminder undertakes pro bono work for charities and underprivileged private clients.
International Work:
Parminder has in-depth practical experience and knowledge of the preparation and litigation of disputes over Probate and inheritance in India, in particular testamentary property under the Hindu Succession Act, and has been of service to Non-Resident Indian clients based in the UK with interests in India in particular. Parminder also has connections to the High Court Bar in Delhi.
Furthermore, as a qualified United States Attorney, Parminder is entitled to advise and represent clients on any legal matters pertaining to the State of New York and may additionally represent clients exceptionally in other States of America, where leave is given.
Hobbies and Interests:
Parminder’s interests away from the Bar include playing a variety of Musical instruments including classical/jazz piano and the guitar, Collecting Artwork and Film memorabilia, Travelling, Porsche motorsports and Classic cars, the history of Sikhism through the centuries, and his continued self-education in several languages resulting in a basic knowledge of Hindi, Punjabi, Italian, Spanish, German, Japanese and a fluent working knowledge of French.
