In 2003, Onye was called to the Bar of England and Wales, by the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn. Prior to this, she graduated with BA (Hons) in Business Information Technology (London Guildhall University), held various management positions for blue chip organisations and ran her own business - a Credit Reference Agency.
Once Onye decided to embark on developing a career at the Bar, her experience as a Barrister’s Clerk, Outdoor Clerk, Fines Prosecutor and Legal Advisor, prepared her for a lucrative practice, in Criminal, Asylum and Immigration law.
Practice
Immigration & Asylum Law
Since coming to the Bar, Onye is regularly instructed to appear for publicly and privately funded clients, at the Immigration and Asylum Chamber (First and Upper Tier Tribunals), throughout England. The range of cases undertaken is diverse and includes, for example, Entry Clearance, Student Visas, Deportation, Bail applications, EC law and the right to reside. Onye is also available to receive instructions in Judicial Review matters.
Criminal Law
Having worked as a Legal Advisor, at various Magistrates Courts, Onye’s in depth knowledge and application of criminal law has sharpened her performance, as a consummate defence advocate. Furthermore, following a successful appeal against a conviction and sentence, at the Old Bailey, in her early years of practice, Onye’s Crown Court work is continuing to evolve.
Whilst at the Bar, it has been noted that Instructing Solicitors instantly connect with Onye’s personable, professional, and mature attitude, whilst their clients often convey their admiration and gratitude, for her persuasive and robust representation.
Pro Bono Work
Onye supports the work of Female Prisoners Welfare Project (FPWP) Hibiscus, a charity that addresses the special needs, of foreign national women imprisoned in the UK.
Memberships
Criminal Bar Association, South Eastern Circuit, Lawyers Christian Fellowship, Commonwealth In England Barristers Association (CEBA), Human Rights Lawyers Association.
Other Activities
Outside the bar, Onye enjoys travelling and keeping fit, especially with Zumba – Latin- inspired dance fitness routines, like salsa, merengue, cumbia and reggaeton. She is currently investigating how to become a Zumba dance instructor.
